Common Characteristics and Types
In popular lore and paranormal investigation, ghosts are often categorized by how they behave:
- Intelligent/Interactive Ghosts: Spirits that seem aware of their surroundings and can interact with the living through whispers, touch, or moving objects.
- Residual Hauntings: Described as “recordings” of past events that repeat in a loop (like footsteps or music) without any awareness of the present.
- Poltergeists: “Noisy ghosts” known for physical disturbances, such as slamming doors, flicking lights, or throwing objects.
- Apparitions: Visible forms that can range from translucent wisps and “shadow people” to realistic, lifelike figures.
- Wraiths and Banshees: Specific types often associated with premonitions of death or a cursed “limbo” state between worlds.
The difference between a spirit and a ghost lies primarily in their definitions and purposes:
- Ghosts are often considered to be the spirits of deceased individuals who have not yet
- moved on to the afterlife. They are typically associated with specific locations or
- individuals and may manifest to communicate or resolve unfinished business. 1
- Spirits, on the other hand, can refer to a broader range of supernatural entities,
- including those that are not tied to a deceased person. They may appear for various
- reasons and can have different forms of communication and interaction. 2

- In summary, while both terms relate to the supernatural, ghosts are specifically linked to the
- deceased, whereas spirits encompass a wider array of entities.
